My new blog [Apr. 11th, 2009|03:54 pm]
Allright,
I'm giving up on this livejournal thing because I finally got my own blog. I will keep this site up to archive my old entries but don't expect any new material. I'm hoping this takes off nicely because I enjoy having complete control of the code.

number 1 again [Mar. 22nd, 2009|09:10 pm]
About a year ago, the unthinkable happened. That's right, my ranking at google had dropped. I have not been able regain the rank of number one until now. My smugmug account is now the number one Thijs de Vries according to Google (and Microsoft Live, but fuck those guys). Hopefully I will retain this title. I will have to make sure to update my SmugMug more often to keep people coming (that's what she said!). Eventually though, I dream of having a blog like blog instead of LiveJournal and SmugMug to spread my nonsense. I might keep this account for the more "for my friends" stuff and than have an official blog for shit I don't mind the public seeing. Well, that's all for now.

Another brew day. [Feb. 22nd, 2009|11:10 am]

Yesterday I had the great fun of trying a coffee brown ale. It does not use actual coffee, but a malt that is roasted so that it has very strong coffee like aroma and flavor. It smelled really good during the mashing. Yesterday was a bit of a wake up call that I should probably invest in a grain crusher if I wanna continue to brew all grain. My efficiency just plain sucks, even though I follow must instructions to a tee. From what I've gathered from home brew forums, when you get your grains crushed by the store you bought them, they are often under crushed. This seems to be for two reasons, they don't want customers complaining that they have a stuck sparge and secondly because it means you have to buy more grain to do the same thing. I may also eventually invest in a system that would allow me to do a gradual sparge instead of just a batch sparge. For those of you who don't brew, the difference between a gradual sparge and a batch sparge is that in a gradual sparge, you are constantly adding water while slowly draining the wart into a brew kettle, while in batch sparging you just add the appropriate water, and than drain. The disadvantage to batch sparging is that it can be less efficient. That being said, batch sparging is much easier and requires no special equipment like a sparge arm or another cooler to keep the sparge water warm.

Anyways, the brown all seemed to go smoothly other than the efficiency. I've found having two propane tanks definitely helps with peace of mind because if I know one tank is completely full, I don't have to worry about the other running out. I've been using the same propane tank for 4 different brews and it is just starting to run out. I can probably use it one more time while having to switch the tanks mid way through brewing. This saves me money on propane because I don't end up panicking and swapping out the tank before I need too. I will probably use a similar strategy with my CO2 tank, where I always have one in use, and one completely full.

I will probably stop brewing in either March or April this year since I will have to worry about getting a job and end up moving. I don't wanna go through the hassle of moving fermentors (though I can probably get away with moving kegs). I am graduating this year so there is a good chance I may have to move somewhere far away. I cannot wait till I get a real job and will have a bit more money to spend on my hobby. I wanna get it to a point where I can afford to brew every other week. I also wanna build a kegerator that has at least two taps, if not four taps. My only concern is if I do move to a city it may be difficult to find an apartment that will let me have a propane tank and brew outside. Even if I get an apartment that has a balcony, many places won't let you grill, and I'm assuming brewing would be equally frowned upon if I plan on using a propane burner. I may just end up going back to extract brewing but I would consider that a step backwards now that I've been doing all grain for a little under a year. I feel the worst case scenario, I could always scale back and try doing 3-4 gallon batches instead of 5-6 gallong batches. The average stove top probably would not have difficult brewing 3 gallons of all grain (you would probably start with 5 gallons and boil it down to 3-4). I was thinking of buying one of these. It's an electric tube you lower into your brew kettle which is good for indoor brewing. I've heard complaints that it can be a bit underpowered compared to propane, but than again, I am a patient man and can wait for the wart to boil. Another compliant I've heard is that it draws a lot of power. I may not have a circuit in whatever apartment I get that can handle it. If I do get one, assuming I have enough power in the house to run it without popping the fuse, is use it with the stove at the same time to get the full boiling potential of propane without the problem of carbon monixide.

why freedom of speech is important even for extremist groups. [Dec. 16th, 2008|09:25 am]
This article explains how people are now being targeted for possible number combinations on there license plates. Though extremist organizations are terrible, it seems what is happening here has the potential of targeting normal people who just happen to have unfortunate number combo's on there cars. When crazy people are allowed to say whatever they want it allows normal people not to have to worry about whether they have 18, 88 or any other combination of letters or numbers in there license plate.

Beer Update [Dec. 3rd, 2008|11:26 pm]
So I have not been updating my journal much so I guess I should keep you guys up to date on my brewing adventures. There have been a few batches that I have not talked about here but I have since forgot them. The last batch I did is a tad unusual. I used 10 lbs of maris otter and one lb of Simpsons golden oats. For hops I used centenial hops. I mashed with 4 gallons of water at 151 degrees for an hour. I sparged with 5 gallons of water. I used the ph buffer to keep things safe. I decided to try something different when everything was done. I used a whirlpool which is a technique where you stir the beer and get it spinning in the pot after it is cooled down. Let it sit for 10 minutes covered after you get a good spin on the wort. The solids should move towards the center of the pot and you can siphon away from them and get really clear beer. I could see right through the hydrometer jar.

Lowering the drinking age and the concept of license to drink [Aug. 31st, 2008|10:38 am]

There has been talk on the news of lowering the drinking age to the age of 18. I believe this would be a stupid idea, the drinking age should be lowered to 19 instead. The problem with 18 is a good chunk of people are still in High School when they turn 18. By the time your 19 your probably done with High School. Any ways, despite this many would wine that 19 would be too young because it would increase the amount of drunk driving. They make it sound that when you turn 21 you magically become responsible enough to not to drink and drive. Though I do agree that there are a lot of immature 19 year olds, there are also many immature 21-100 year olds, though be there less than them. Eventually adults should be treated like adults and allowed to drink if they would like. As for binge drinking, I had no problem drinking myself stupid when I was under 21. It would be off cheap shitty booze that my older friends would buy. When I turned 21 I stopped binge drinking as often, not because I was more mature but because it lost it's appeal and I was able to start enjoying high quality drinks that were more filling than piss beer and vodka.

I do believe that lowering the drinking age would increase the amount of drunk driving deaths if precautions were not taken. This is were the idea of the drinking license comes in. The idea is when you turn 19, you will automatically be issued this license if you choose to drink. You will need this license to purchase alcohol from anywhere whether they be bars or liquor stores. The idea is that if you mess up, whether it be drunk driving, public drunkenness or providing liquor for your underage friends this license will be taken away from you. This will apply to everyone, including people over 21. The license can be taken away from you for a certain amount of time depending on how bad the offense is. For drunk driving, you will not be legally able to drink for 2 years. Public drunkenness you will lose your license for 2 months. For providing alcohol for minors you will lose your license for a year. The kicker is that you will also be able to enforce probation violations. If the judge orders someone not to drink, all they would have to do is take away the license and at the very least, the offender would not be able to purchase alcohol from liquor stores or from bars.

In the end I believe a system like this would decrease drunk driving even if the drinking age was lowered because there would actually be a way to prevent drunk drivers from drinking.

new photos [Aug. 21st, 2008|11:01 pm]
new photos on my smugmug. New photos include a couple more of kiki, 2 of ginger the dog and some photos of Sam Adams. Been trying to do more photography now that I have a digital and it's practically free. Unfortunately I have not been brewing in awhile. I'll probably pick up another kit tomorrow. I finally got my score results from Sam Adams. Both my beers got criticized for not being hoppy enough. I figured the British Bitter would lose points for lack of bitterness but the American Pale Ale I brewed tasted plenty hoppy when I sent it. I'm guessing age took it's tole and the hoppiness subsided. Probably shows that I need to be more patient when I drink my beer because at first I thought it was too hoppy. Though some of the bitterness I think was from astringency from over sparging the grains. I'm going to give it another shot with the Sam Adams patriots brewing competition. The winner of that contest gets there beer served at the 2009/2010 Patriots game. I wanna retry the Lager I made earlier, this time making an all grain version. I was also thinking of trying to make a more malty rendition of the classic American lager. School will be starting in 2 weeks. Hopefully with everything else I'll be able to find time to brew.

War in Georgia [Aug. 9th, 2008|11:55 am]
Any one who does not get there news from CNN or any other American news agency probably knows that Georgia and Russia are in a full out conflict. Last night, while Russia was dropping bombs over Georgia CNN thought it was more important to discuss John Edwards sex life. The crazy liberal side of me wants to believe that the right wing media is trying to destroy his career at the risk that he will be the VP for Obama. The more observant side of me believes that we as Americans are so starved and ashamed of sex that we need to get our pornography from cnn. Hey Lindsay Lohans showing her cooch! Grab me some tissues! Apparently who is having sex with who is more important than the 2000 who have died already. I almost feel like boycotting all American news and relying solely on bbcnews and other foreign online news sources. I do believe getting multiple view points is important but I don't even get a viewpoint if they refuse to cover something as important as a war.
